Champion anglers praise Buckeye Lake
BUCKEYE LAKE -- The water quality in Buckeye Lake, the focus of health advisories in summer 2011, appears improved, according to professional champion fishermen.
The Buckeye Lake Region Chamber of Commerce invited Bass Anglers Sportsmen Society members to Friday's annual George Pugh Full Pool breakfast at the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club.
Todd Thompson, of Heath, founder of the Ohio BASS Federation Nation and former president and director of the BASS Federation Youth Program, said the lake appears better than in summer 2011, when state agencies issued public health advisories for Brooks, Fairfield and Crystal beaches.
"As anglers, we're not seeing it to those extremes (of 2011)," Thompson said. "If Mother Nature is doing something funny to a body of water, we're the first ones to see it, and the first ones to complain."
Hal Harper, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources East Central Ohio District manager, said he appreciated hearing views from those fishing the lake.
