New bridge a 'done deal': May
THE RTA’s proposed $3.5 million footbridge over Spit Rd, north of Parriwi Rd, is a “fait accompli” and is expected to be built by the end of this year.
The authority will consult the community on design options during a public meeting at Middle Harbour Yacht Club later this month. The general manager of Mosman Council, Viv May, said the footbridge was “always going to be built”.
“It’s a credit to the RTA that they are involving the community in the design process,” Mr May said.
Last year the RTA sought feedback on two concepts for the bridge - a steel-box girder and a through-truss design.
The RTA said the through-truss design was preferred by 54 per cent of the 119 people who lodged submissions.
Both Mosman and Manly councils have rejected the plan, saying the bridge would destroy the visual amenity of The Spit and improvements to traffic flow would be negligible.
“It’s a big, ugly and expensive bridge designed to improve traffic flow at the expense of pedestrian and cyclist convenience,” Mosman councillor Warren Yates said.
