Irrelevant Week Begins Today
Irrelevant Week — a quirky, Newport Beach tradition that honors the last pick of the NFL draft — begins today with an arrival party at the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort.
This year’s Mr. Irrelevant is Cheta Ozougwu, a Rice University defensive end who was picked by the Houston Texans as the 254th and final pick in the 2011 NFL draft.
Ozougwu, 22, will receive gifts from the community at the kickoff party, which is open to the public and will include food and entertainment, organizers said. The party will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with Mr. Irrelevant arriving by boat at about 6:15 p.m. The Dunes is located at 1131 Back Bay Drive. Admission is free, but food tickets cost $10 at the door, and there will be a no-host bar.
On Tuesday, he will spend the day at Disneyland, and on Wednesday he will be the guest of honor at the All-Star Lowsman Banquet at the Newport Beach Marriott and will awarded the “Lowsman” Trophy, which mimics the Heisman but depicts a player fumbling a football. Banquet guests include Clay Matthews, Sr., Clay Matthews, Jr., John Ireland, Tom Kelly, Mike Haynes and more. Banquet tickets cost $125; click here for more information. Funds raised during Irrelevant Week will benefit Goodwill of OC Fitness Center.
From the Balboa Yacht Club, I could not help but notice Kerri Luttrel. She spent the summer with a smile on her face and a bounce in her step.
