Several Annapolis-based professionals are participating in the Transatlantic Race 2011, being run by the New York Yacht Club in association with the Royal Ocean Racing Club and Storm Trysail Club.
Gavin Brady, Chris Larson and Ian Gordon are part of the crew aboard Beau Geste, a Farr 80 owned by Karl Kwok of Hong Kong. Brady and Larson will serve as tactician and strategist, respectively, while Gordon is a grinder.
Beau Geste is one of six entries in the largest class of boats, which is headlined by the 100-footers Rambler and ICAP Leopard. Another notable entry in that class is Puma Ocean Racing, the newly launched Volvo 70 skippered by Ken Read. Annapolis resident Jan Majer will be part of the afterguard aboard Vanquish, a Reichel-Pugh 65 that is being sailed by the Merchant Marine Academy offshore squad.
The Transatlantic Race 2011 began Sunday with the smaller boats starting off Castle Hill Lighthouse in Newport. Zaraffa, a Reichel-Pugh 65 owned by Skip Sheldon, was part of the second start in Cruiser-Racer division that was held yesterday. Geoff Ewenson is calling tactics while fellow Annapolitan David Flynn is trimming on Zaraffa.
