Editor's note: This is the seventh in a series of stories this week on the Mackinac race. The View from the Crew features on Rowdy will run through the finish at Mackinac Island.
Darren Shavinski said he drove members of United States Navy Seabees Construction Battalion "crazy" was his constant talk of sailing.
"If we had a windy day, I would say 'I'd love to be sailing right now,'" said Shavinski, 45, of Marine City. "I also used to tell them all the time that it would be a great day to be out on the sailboat.
"I talked about the Mackinac Race all the time. A number of them knew about the race, but my buddies from Nebraska and Georgia never heard of it."
It certainly wasn't a great day Saturday for sailing as the lack of wind marred the start of the 87th running of the Mackinac race.
Shavinski, the 1985 Marine City graduate, is sailing on Rowdy, a
T-35, on the Thunder Bay Course.
Shortly after the 2010 Mackinac
race, Shavinski headed to the city of Kandahar in Afghanistan with the Navy Seabees.
