Newport Harbor Commission Chairman Moving On
“Since Don oversaw a lot of the work that got us to this point of dredging the Lower Bay, but no dredging has yet occurred, we’d like to present Don with the first cubic foot of dredged sediment,” harbor commissioner Marshall Duffield joked, placing a plastic bag of dirt in front of Lawrenz. Duffield followed up by giving Lawrenz a “new type of eelgrass plant” that could live outside of bay waters.
While the process has taken longer than boaters and other harbor users would like, there is no doubt that dredging is on its way.
The Rhine Channel dredging project is set to start Aug. 1, and Newport Beach Harbor Resources is currently in talks with the Port of Long Beach to see if it will accept additional contaminated sediment from a planned $4.5 million Lower Bay project, including removal of 200,000 cubic yards of sediment.
The projects have been moved forward thanks, in part, to the “long words and scientific talk” Lawrenz brought to conversations
