Business tycoon, 'captain of industry' Brice Phillips dies
(July 8, 2011) Brice Phillips’ expectation of having a leisurely life on Hooper’s Island did not last long. His life evolved into tremendous success, both personally and in business.Brice and Shirley planned to run their packinghouse on Hooper’s Island during most of the year. During the summers, they planned to sell the crabs from the processing plant at a small carryout shop in Ocean City. The packing plant had been established by Brice’s father, A. E. Phillips, in 1914 and the Phillipses were ready to expand the business.
Spending most of the year on Hooper’s Island and the summers in Ocean City would be a nice lifestyle to have while raising their two sons, Steve and Jeffrey.
With an investment of $2,000, the Phillipses bought a shack for a carry-out business at 2oth Street and Philadelphia Avenue. It also had four seats and the carry-out business downstairs. The family lived upstairs and Shirley’s mother, Mrs. Flowers, used her own recipe to make crab cakes.
