Classics' Race Kicks Off Race Week at the Larchmont Yacht Club
Race Week, the race seemingly marked a resurgence of interest in classic boats on Western Long Island Sound, said several racers. 10 years ago, just two classic owners docked in the area and had to go to Newport to race.Now, there are races throughout the metropolitan area. On Saturday, 13 boats sailed under difficult conditions. On Sunday, the same group raced off the coast of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in Oyster Bay, Long Island.
Like vintage automobile aficionados, classics' owners marvel in their boats’ construction and meticulously restore them to pristine condition. Like genealogists, they research the pedigree of design materials and past ownership. The prevailing maxim in this crowd: they don’t build them like they used to.
Many owners wear knit polo shirts monogrammed generally with the boat’s name, flag and year of construction. Sometimes the class is also included.
“Owning a classic boat is like keeping a vintage grand piano in your backyard open to the elements,” said Alex Dubitsky, owner of Bernice, a 1916 P Class vessel designed by George Owen.
