Challenge for Sarasota architect
But Sultana's resume is not as thick as those of Guy Peterson, Tim Seibert, Jonathan Parks and the late Paul Rudolph, either.
In the end, that did not make much of a difference to the wealthy English client who wanted a large modernist house. Sultana was given the chance to convince the client that he was up to the task of designing a modern house that is "very different."
Sultana had him at the garage. The architect, a partner with Tom Denslow in the firm DSDG Inc., designed that detached structure first, with a guest suite on the second level, and got the job. "I absolutely love it," the Englishman said.
And now Sultana is taking his place on a street of dream houses called Westway Drive. There, his work will be compared with that of old-guard modernists Seibert (Hiss Studio) and Rudolph (Umbrella House) and new-age designers Peterson, who has designed two houses nearby, and Parks, who has one under construction and recently completed an extensive remodel of another.
Their idea was to go after the luxury dayboat time-share club market — a market they would actually be creating. “Yachting made simple,” their slogan went.
